Bayswater: Hyde Park on Your Doorstep
Bayswater is one of London's most underrated places to stay. It sits directly on Hyde Park — Europe's most visited green space — yet feels residential rather than touristy. The grand stucco terraces, the mix of cultures, and the easy access to Notting Hill, Paddington, and the West End make it a genuinely brilliant base for exploring London.
What to See and Do
Hyde Park is effectively on your doorstep — enter at Lancaster Gate and you're in 350 acres of parkland within minutes. The Serpentine and its galleries (the main gallery plus the Sackler) show consistently strong contemporary art, free to visit. The Diana Memorial Fountain and the Victorian Albert Memorial are both worth finding. On summer evenings, the park hosts some of London's best outdoor concerts (check Hyde Park Live). Ten minutes west of Bayswater, Portobello Road in Notting Hill comes alive on Saturday mornings — antiques, vintage clothing, and some of the best street food in London. Notting Hill itself is lovely to wander: the painted houses of Pembridge Villas, the Electric Cinema (one of London's oldest picture houses), and the independent bookshops on Blenheim Crescent.
Eating and Drinking
Queensway has long been one of London's most international eating streets — Chinese restaurants (Royal China is the benchmark for dim sum), Lebanese bakeries, and Persian cafes all within a few hundred metres. Khan's on Westbourne Grove has been serving good Indian food since 1977 and hasn't lost a step. For coffee, Farmacy on Westbourne Grove is the best plant-based cafe in this part of London. For evening drinks, The Mitre on Craven Terrace is a proper Victorian pub with good beer and a garden. Heading into Notting Hill, The Ledbury on Ledbury Road is one of London's finest restaurants — worth booking if the occasion warrants it.
Getting Around
Bayswater (Circle, District) sits right on the north edge of Hyde Park. Queensway (Central line) is on the same street and gives direct access to the West End (Bond Street in 7 minutes) and east (Bank in 15, Liverpool Street in 20). Paddington — a 10-minute walk — is one of London's biggest hubs with the Elizabeth line (Heathrow in 30 minutes), Heathrow Express (15 minutes), and Great Western trains to Oxford. The 23 and 27 buses run the length of Westbourne Grove and connect to Notting Hill, Ladbroke Grove, and Kensington.
Best Time to Visit
Summer in Bayswater is exceptional: Hyde Park concerts and events, Portobello at full tilt, and outdoor dining across Westbourne Grove. The Notting Hill Carnival (August bank holiday weekend) is a London institution — extraordinary but very crowded; book weeks ahead and know that much of W2 becomes impassable on Sunday and Monday. Spring (April–May) when the park is blooming is arguably the most beautiful time. Winter is quieter and more affordable; Hyde Park Winter Wonderland (November–January) is a short walk and genuinely good fun.
Getting to Bayswater
From Heathrow: Elizabeth line to Paddington (25–30 min) then 10 minutes on foot to Bayswater, or District/Circle to Bayswater directly (45 min total). From Gatwick: Thameslink to Blackfriars then Circle to Bayswater (around 60 min). From King's Cross: Circle line direct to Bayswater (25 min).
