Camden: London's Most Spirited Neighbourhood
Camden has always had more energy than the tourist brochures can capture. Yes, there are the famous markets. But stay here for a few days and you find that it's a real neighbourhood — with independent cafes, an extraordinary canal, and some of the best live music in the city. It's also one of the best-connected parts of London, with King's Cross, the West End, and Hampstead all within easy reach.
What to See and Do
Camden Market and the adjacent Stables Market are worth a morning — but come on a weekday to avoid the weekend crush. The food stalls in the Stables (especially the global street food section) are some of the best affordable eating in London. The Regent's Canal towpath is where Camden locals actually spend their time: a flat, car-free walk that takes you east towards Angel and Islington or west into the very different world of Little Venice in Maida Vale. At the east end of the canal, Granary Square and the King's Cross development have given the area a genuinely attractive public space — fountains, restaurants, and the Coal Drops Yard retail district worth exploring. Back in Camden, the Roundhouse on Chalk Farm Road remains one of London's most atmospheric live music venues — check the programme before you arrive.
Eating and Drinking
Mango Room on Kentish Town Road is Camden's best Caribbean restaurant and has been for years. Chin Chin Labs on Camden Lock Place invented liquid nitrogen ice cream and still does it better than anyone. For a proper sit-down lunch, The Hawley Arms on Castlehaven Road is a good Camden pub with better food than it has any obligation to offer. Coffee-wise, Redemption Roasters on Delancey Street is exceptional — roasted by former offenders, genuinely excellent espresso. For dinner with a view of the canal, Barge East (actually in Hackney Wick but worth the mention) is the benchmark; closer to home, Shrimpy's in King's Cross is reliable modern European with good natural wine.
Getting Around
Camden Town (Northern line, Charing Cross branch) puts you at Euston in 3 minutes, Leicester Square in 7, and Bank in 14. Chalk Farm is the quieter station one stop north, better for access to the Roundhouse and the market's quieter end. King's Cross St Pancras — just 10 minutes' walk from the Camden apartments — is one of London's great transport hubs: 6 Tube lines, the Elizabeth line, and Eurostar to Paris. Night buses N5, N20, N253 cover Camden through the early hours on weekends.
Best Time to Visit
Camden is a year-round neighbourhood. Summer brings the canal to life with outdoor seating and a festive atmosphere around the lock. The markets get very busy on summer weekends — come early or midweek. Winter is underrated: Christmas at the Stables Market is warm and atmospheric, and the canal walk in the frost with a coffee from a kiosk is a genuine pleasure. For live music, the Roundhouse's autumn/winter programme is typically the strongest.
