East Dulwich, London

East Dulwich: South-East London's Best-Kept Village

East Dulwich is the kind of neighbourhood that people move to and never leave. Lordship Lane is a high street done right — independent bakeries, good bookshops, wine bars, and a farmers' market — and the surrounding streets are quiet, residential, and beautiful in that specifically south London Victorian way. It's far enough from the centre to feel like a genuine escape but close enough (20 minutes to London Bridge) to make it a practical base.

What to See and Do

Dulwich Picture Gallery on Gallery Road is the world's first purpose-built public art gallery (1811, designed by Sir John Soane) and has a permanent collection that would embarrass most national institutions: Rembrandt, Poussin, Rubens, Gainsborough, Canaletto. Admission is modest, the building is extraordinary, and it's almost never crowded. Crystal Palace Park (20 minutes by bus) is one of south London's great green spaces — 200 acres with the famous Victorian dinosaur sculptures in the lake (the world's first full-scale dinosaur replicas, created in 1854), a sports centre, and sweeping views from the top of the hill. Herne Hill Velodrome is a living piece of 1891 history — Britain's oldest operating cycle track, open to public cycling sessions on weekends. Dulwich Woods on the south edge of Sydenham Hill is ancient woodland with bluebells in spring.

Eating and Drinking

Lordship Lane is the axis of East Dulwich's food scene. The Palmerston is a straightforward gastropub that does things very well — particularly the Sunday roast. Arancini Brothers serves outstanding rice balls from a small cafe on the lane. COCO Tang does the best brunch in SE22. For coffee, Bona Foodie on Lordship Lane roasts its own and has a pleasant back terrace. The East Dulwich Farmers' Market runs on Saturdays (Goose Green, 10am–2pm) and is a proper market with seasonal produce, cheese, meat, and bakery stalls. For a special evening, Darby's in Greenwich (20 minutes) is worth the journey — Irish-American cooking in a very good room.

Getting Around

East Dulwich station (Overground/London Bridge) puts you at London Bridge in 14 minutes, City Thameslink in 18, and Blackfriars in 20. The P13 bus connects East Dulwich to Elephant and Castle (Victoria and Jubilee lines) in around 30 minutes. The 176 bus goes to Elephant and Peckham. The Overground is excellent for cross-south-London trips without going into the centre — Brockley, New Cross, Whitechapel (on the Elizabeth line), and Stratford are all accessible without going through Zone 1. For the airport, Gatwick is around 40 minutes direct from Forest Hill (neighbouring station).

Best Time to Visit

Spring and early summer (April–June) are East Dulwich at its best — the trees on the residential streets are in bloom, Dulwich Woods has bluebells in April, and the Picture Gallery's sculpture garden is at its loveliest. October is excellent: the farmers' market has autumn produce at its peak and the surrounding parks are spectacular in the early leaf fall. December is good for a quieter, authentic south London Christmas — Lordship Lane does Christmas well without the West End chaos.

Getting to East Dulwich

From London Bridge: direct Overground train, 14 minutes. From Victoria: bus (45 min) or train via Herne Hill (around 30 min with a change). From Heathrow: Elizabeth line to Farringdon then Thameslink south toward East Dulwich station (60–70 min total). From Gatwick: direct Thameslink to Forest Hill (35 min), 10-minute walk to the apartment.

Local tip: The Dulwich Picture Gallery is free for locals and very cheap for visitors, yet many Londoners have never been. The Rembrandt room alone is worth the trip from anywhere in the city. Go on a weekday morning when it's quiet.
