Wimbledon, London

Wimbledon: Leafy, Calm, and Famously Well-Connected

Wimbledon divides into two distinct parts: the hill (the Village and Common) and the town (around the station). Both are leafy and liveable in a way that feels genuinely different from central London. The train to Waterloo takes 18 minutes, which means you get south-west London's space and greenery without sacrificing any access to the centre.

What to See and Do

Wimbledon Common is one of London's largest open spaces — 1,140 acres of woodland, heath, and open grassland. The windmill (18th century, still standing, museum inside) is the landmark at the centre. It's a proper wild common rather than a manicured park, and beautiful in every season. The Wimbledon Village on the hill has some of the best independent shops in south-west London: a good wine merchant, independent bookshop, gallery, and a high street that feels genuinely local. The All England Club (Wimbledon) runs guided tours year-round (the Championships run for two weeks in late June/early July — tickets by ballot released months in advance, though the queue on the day is a London institution in itself). Cannizaro Park on the edge of the Common is a walled garden open to the public — particularly lovely in late spring.

Eating and Drinking

The Fox and Grapes on Camp Road is the best pub on the edge of the Common — good food, real ale, and a beautiful position. In the Village, Côte Wimbledon is reliable and well-regarded for brasserie food, and The Hand in Hand on Crooked Billet is an old-fashioned pub with a garden that feels like the countryside. For coffee, Riccarton Coffee on Wimbledon Hill Road is the local favourite. For a special meal, San Lorenzo Fuoriporta on Worple Road is a long-standing Italian that the neighbourhood loves. Raynes Park (10 minutes south) has a string of excellent Korean and Japanese restaurants on the High Street.

Getting Around

Wimbledon Chase (the station we're closest to) is on the Thameslink line — Waterloo East in 18 minutes, Farringdon in 35, St Pancras in 40. Wimbledon main station adds District line (Earls Court in 20 min) and Tramlink to Croydon and Beckenham. Trains to Waterloo run every 15 minutes. The Common is walkable from the apartment (around 20 minutes up the hill to the main entrance). South Wimbledon (Northern line) takes you to Bank in 25 minutes.

Best Time to Visit — Especially During The Championships

The Championships (late June to early July) transform Wimbledon into arguably the most famous sporting fortnight in the world. If you're coming for tennis: the ballot for show court tickets opens in the autumn; ground passes for the outer courts queue on the day (arrive by 6am for the best chances; by 8am you'll still get in). The atmosphere in the Village and around the grounds is exceptional during fortnight. Outside of tennis season, late April to June (the Common in flower, the gardens at their peak) is beautiful. October to March is quieter and good value; the Common is atmospheric in mist and frost.

Getting to Wimbledon

From Heathrow: Elizabeth line to Ealing Broadway (30 min), District line to Wimbledon (further 30 min), then a short bus or taxi to the apartment. Alternatively, train to Waterloo then direct to Wimbledon Chase (18 min). From Gatwick: direct Thameslink train to Wimbledon Chase (under 50 min). From King's Cross: Thameslink direct to Wimbledon Chase (40 min).

Local tip: Walk up Wimbledon Hill Road from the station into the Village, pick up coffee from one of the cafes, and follow the footpath signs to the Common. Within 20 minutes of arriving at the apartment you can be standing in 1,000 acres of woodland. London has very few experiences like it.
